Week 3

Monday 17th November

Only 1 week today until I leave!! SO MUCH TO DO and so little time. It seems that we complete 1 item on the list and add another 2.
Oh well, lucky i love my job.

I forgot to mention the other day i went to the dispensary at Piave to see the crew and we saw a wonderful device in place on the front of the building. A free condom dispenser! We were in shock as this was actually put in place from the government! Shock Horror!

We are in need of a fence around our compound to keep out intruders (humans & animals)
We have the posts which have been already generously donated. We now just need the barbed wire and u-nails.
We require 12 rolls (610 metres) of wire @ $90.00 each and a 50kg bag of U-nails @ $120.00.
If you would like to sponsor this project we would be thrilled. Please contact me if you are interested!

Tuesday 18th November

I did not write this diary entry yesterday as after we came home from a HUGE day i attempted to download the 200+ photos (some of the most important photos of my whole trip) and my camera and computer decided to get together and test my patience by deleting all the photos off my camera!!! but 24 hours later i have now recovered them so i will tell you about my day.

We went to see another home today and i was heart broken. There were approx 70 children at this home and it was a sad place. It was so dirty, so empty, so sad, so dark and so cold.

The difference between the place we went today and our home is massive. If only they just put in some care and love it would make the world of difference. I wanted to pack them up and take them all home with me. These children were beautiful and sung us a beautiful song which i will upload on You Tube when i return home (internet SLOW here) so be sure to check back.

I left the home so close to tears and it was the hardest thing i have had to see since being here this time. There is so much sadness out there. I am only in 1 town in 1 country. The thought of what goes on in this world really breaks my heart.

Today we also went to see one of our children who has been fostered out. 'Baby Robert' (aka Rabbit) he is doing so well and has really changed and he adores his mother and she adores him.

I have included a picture on the left of Robert and his mum when he first left and then the picture we took yesterday....

Wednesday 19th November

I had to share this photo of our Isaac. He has come such a long way. He was the 1st child that Ivan and Mary ever got. He is now in middle class (promoted from baby class this year as he was doing so well) and he does very well at school (Ivan thinks he should go straight into high school). He came home from school today COVERED in dirt from playing football. He was happy to pose for the photo for the diary and is excited you all get to see him!

The house for Damaris and family is coming along really well. It is about to get concreted and her family will be able to move in my the end of next week. She is so excited.

Last night we had a scare. Ivan heard screaming so he called us all outside to hear and it was a woman screaming so loud i was sure she was being raped or killed. Ivan worked out that it was coming from our neighbours house so he took 2 guards and 2 dogs and got in the car to go and help. Just before he left we heard 2 gun shots and we figured it was from the neighbour as we know he has a gun. Ivan went down to help and was gone for some time... story is that 4 men broke in and robbed one of the workers. The neighbour shot the gun to scare them off... Ivan sent out the guards and dogs to see if they could sniff them out but no luck. Its that time of year (before Christmas) that there are alot of break ins so people can get money for Christmas.

The screams last night really bothered me. I just cannot comprehend what it was like here over the post election violence.

'Coke Bottle Lady with her key for the tap around her neck'

Thursday 20th November

Today was a great (BUSY!) day.
We started the day early by heading into the village to see some of the families MIA looks after and also to see if there are any families in the village who need some help.

I really enjoy going deep into the village and seeing how some families live and seeing the kids get excited when they see us. Although, i do have so say that some of the kids get frightened as alot of them have never seen a white person and they get told that 'mzungus (white people) will eat you' or that they will steal you. So, understandably some of the kids would not come near us.

We found many families and were able to give out alot of clothes and some sweet biscuits for the kids. We visited our old friend 'coke bottle lady' (she has thick coke bottle glasses) and she is doing well. She is an old grandmother who cares for her grand children. We recently installed a water tank for her and she told us today that she has not had to walk to the river for water since we installed it.
She also showed us the key that she keeps to work the tap on the water tank that she keeps around her neck.

We also went to see a beautiful old couple who we know by 'the crocodile man' this is because his skin was so scaled and dry when we first met him he called for our help as he did not know what it was. His skin looked like a crocodiles. Ivan asked him how often he drank water and he advised that he had NEVER drunk water in his life. mmmm, no wonder he was looking like leather!
He is now doing really well and we went to check on them and tell then that we will be installing a water tank for him and his wife very soon to catch the rain water. They were so grateful and so happy. They are soooo cute. I just wanted to take them home and give them tea and biscuits.

Friday 21st November 2008

I cant believe it is Friday already. I leave on Sunday... boohoo
We went to a fantastic place today called Kenana Knitters. It is a wonderful project set up to empower woman to earn a living. It is such a good idea. They make handmade woolen toys and clothes that are all dyed naturally by plants etc...
The women get paid for how ever much they make in a day and they are able to bring their children to work. All profits made from this company is invested back into the community to help the woman such a counseling, HIV testing etc.. It is great so make sure you check out the website. I bought a bunch of cool stuff,
The kids had a great day today on the water slide again today. It is soooo funny to watch them slipping and sliding around all over the place. Today alot of the kids sat at the end of the slide chanting the kids name right before they would come sliding down and crash right into them. They loved it.
Alot of our kids got a haircut today as well as you will see from the photo...

Saturday 22nd November 2008

Today is my last day with the children.... i leave tomorrow.
It is sabbath for everyone here so we get the bigger children ready for church and head into town. Church today was in Swahili and extra looooonnnnnngggg. My back hated me by the end of it.
We all came home and ate lots of delicious food prepared by the amazing Mary and we were so full we couldn't move.
We went out and checked out how the school is going. This time next year when i come back it will be fully functional so it will be wonderful to see the difference.
The children had a treat of popcorn after dinner tonight and they all sat down and shared a bowl together... again, so cute!
I am now finishing up work that i have to complete before i leave. so much to do still and when i get back home my list is massive. I am not complaining, i am boasting that i have the best job in the world.
I will write again once i return home. x
