A day on the Ice PDF Print

We took some of the bigger Mission 2 kids into Nairobi to try ice skating. Imagine, these kids were surprised that ice cream is so cold. Wonder what was going through their heads when they felt the temperature at the rink!

I have never seen kids that hit the deck so often, get up, laugh and get going again. They did so well. There was plenty of wall hugging in the beginning.

We had about an hour to skate and by the end quite a few of them were going really well.

Ivan can skate, and was trying to pass on a few pointers to the kids.

Poor Doreen won the award for most time spent sitting on the ice! But, every time, she would laugh, get up and keep trying. She's such a great kid.

They had these little penguin stabilisers which were a great help in getting the kids off the wall.

They came off the ice laughing, happy, and excited. It was great seeing them spend an afternoon exactly how kids their age should - having fun.

You wouldn't believe how appreciative these kids are of an afternoon spent like this. It doesn't even have to involve a trip to Nairobi and an activity like ice skating, just to be carefree, normal children, after the trauma they have been through is enough.

They are really such great kids and deserve all the joy life has to offer.

Our completed school.... PDF Print

I have some updated photos of our completed school. The last four classrooms were completed after many delays. Things like being unable to get iron for the roof to a delay on the glass for the windows. And these delays weren't just a few days, or even weeks, we had to wait for some materials for over three months!!!

But now we are all complete and are so happy with the results.

Above: This is the final stage completed and year 5 through to 8 are now occupying these rooms.

Above: The rooms provide such a nice learning space for the kids. The rooms are light and cool, and have a nice outlook.

Here are some photos of the kids enjoying drawing with chalk out in the sun. Volunteers often ask what they can do with the kids. Simple craft activities like these are always a hit.

The kids sat for ages working on their chalk artworks. They really enjoyed it.

The activity was a bit tame for Sammy though. He found it more fun to roll down the hill..........

A Visit to the Giraffe Sanctuary PDF Print

Some of our bigger kids form MIA 2 enjoyed a day out at the Giraffe Sanctuary. It is set over 60 acres and the giraffes roam around freely coming and going from the visitors platform at their will.

Visitors are invited to stand on the platform area and feed the giraffes pellets that are provided. Every visitor is restricted to 2 small cups of pellets each.

The giraffes will feed form your hand or form your mouth whichever you prefer!

Above: This giraffe has just taken a pellet form our Doreen's mouth. She was the first person on the platform and the only one of our kids to offer the giraffe a pellet form her mouth!

There were a couple of other animals to see.

But the definite stars of the day were the giraffes.

Made with Love.... PDF Print

A lovely group of ladies form Adelaide have handmade each one of our kids a gorgeous patchwork quilt for their beds. They were SO excited when we gave them out.

It is so nice for them to have something of their own, that is different to everyone else's.
